One of my favorite moments in this show was at the end of an episode: Narrator: It is a secret we have known since before Gohan could even form words in his mouth... That ending is seen by some as the best dbz ending. Only surpassed by Goku going Super Saiyan to some. They don't understand how much they built him up and how much anticipation fans had of Gohan's potential and they ruined it at the start of the Building Saga from the time skip to watching him beat up ordinary human criminals and play baseball... Isn't that Yamcha's sport? Became predictable that Goku and Vegeta were the only 2 important characters. If Gohan surpassed his limits in Super, you couldn't really SEE that change. He should have been able to kill Golden Frieza-strong. He has 100% control of his full power without the need to transform. SSG, anyone? Nah, they're not Goku or Vegeta. Future Trunks' power up against Zamasu was worse in cheesiness than Mystic Gohan. They ruined so many characters and potential as well.

This made me genuinely sad. It reminded me of how much hype I had for Teen Gohan and the rage he also had as a kid and how far he fell after the Cell Saga. During Cell saga, he was 2nd place for me. If done well, I believe he can come back and be so much more interesting and cared for again. Especially now that most of Dragon Ball fans are older.

Goku should have ended up with Bulma. They had chemistry at the world martial arts tournament when he remet chi chi. Then none of this would have panned out. Gohan/Trunks would be allowed to train by Bulma. And Vegeta and Chi chi is wayy more firey anyway. Then gohan wouldn't be a nerd. He'd be smart - like Trunks but also strong.

The problem with DB as a whole is that it ignores the supporting cast. Goten and Kid Trunks don't get used for anything any more. Tien and Krillin are only ever strong enough to bring along to get beat up. Yamcha is so bad his meme became cannon. Piccolo only ever gets to look cool in the background. Only Vegeta remains slightly relevant, and even then he's just there for henchman clean up and fusion fodder.

The problem with Gohan is that they tried to make him more light hearted like Goku a love able idiot. If they would have kept Gohan as the smart serious character from the end of the Cell story he would have made a great lead. The only problem would be the story would lose a lot of its sense of humor that it gets with Goku.

I personally also am not as sweet on the end of the cell saga as most people seem to be. The build up of Gohan's character was him growing into his power and responsibility being central to his character, where it started that his power was a happenstance disjointed from who he was as a person. As his arc closed I felt like it was supposed to have him grow into his power and not require something dramatic to bring it to the forefront, as it should have been a core a part of him at that point. But that never happens, the final moments of the cell saga are just him getting a rage boost and winning via that again which was almost like tumbling back down a flight of stairs at the top. Granted IF things had gone better for the character in the next arc it might have tied together that the final moment was the turning point but that got ruined too. He lost the anger trigger like he was supposed to but none of the payoff for coming to terms with his strength exists, and additionally we lost the character moment peaks to contrast the long lulls of nonaction with the bursts of anger at the same time. Long story short on my point I guess is that the cell saga arc for Gohan was just a tad incomplete and the Buu saga took steps backwards instead of making the last step forward required so it doubled down on the problems with Gohan's character.

I'll admit Gohan was a little disappointing in the Majin arc, except what was more disappointing was how the story failed to evolve to fit him as a new protangist. In that respect I wasn't ever really disappointed by Gohan's initial presentation in DragonBall Super. I actually quite enjoyed seeing how Gohan got to settle down with a family of his own. His story was over, but at least he got a happy ending. The problem as I see it is more so in the nostalgia pandering, in that the series kept forcing all these callbacks to past character moments, not just for Gohna, but pretty much the entire cast. I think that trend, however, has been the most damaging to Gohan because it meant he's never been allowed to fade onto sidelines with the rest of the supporting cast, and instead set up expectations that his character was going to "rise" back up to take center stage again, only to repeatedly dash those expectations every time the status quo reset. I get why people might find Gohan disappointing, but I find that sentiment misplace. Gohan could have maybe been a great protangist, but he's a fundamentally different character from his father and so for Gohan to work at as the leading hero the whole entire series would have needed to evolve into something entirely different as well.

Disagree with the fact tht gohan couldnt have been a good main character. They already had a model to make gohan like and tht was future gohan. If they made gohan similar to future gohan it wouldve been nice and made sense as he couldlve used gokus death and word as advice to take action as a main character.

What went wrong with Gohan? Simple, ChiChi happened. Goku never made any money for her, and her tiny stupid mind can’t see why you’d want to save the whole universe if you’re still going to be poor afterwards, so she had Gohan study to become a good little drone for her society. When that was added to his arc, it was over. So right after Cell, when ChiChi took him is when he died.

Just my opinion, gohan lost people when he refused to grow up. In every sense od the phrase his journey and potential to grow up was his strength, like you said, but he fails to grow up in his worlds sense of grasping his place in the world and handling those responsibilities. Instead he becomes a sheltered teenager, against all reason, with a childish take on justice he was never exposed to. As a child he is a fighter despite his scholarly ambitions, and his intelligence comes in handy, but that intelligence coupled with his experiences makes everything done with gohans character after the cell saga utterly irrational. Which wouldn't be so bad if all these irrational choices weren't trying to force gohan to be relatable through agressive stagnation and regression instead of relatable growth, making room for someone else to fill the role of the small, child character. Namely goten, who seems slightly unnecessary already and is all the more so due to gohan refusing to grow out of the role of the childish, conflicted, promising underdog

In my opinion the most upsetting thing about Gohan is that he shows so much potential and doesn't get a chance to show out. Mostly I am referencing DBS when discussing the main issues with his character development. 1. I enjoy the differences in Gohan's behavior in the Resurrection F vice the show, specifically in the way Gohan handles Frieza. While he still loses, it's in a much more dignified way. Also notice this is before Gohan decides it is time to get a little more serious at fighting.2. During the T.O.P Arc, we get a chance to see Gohan get serious. He revisits his Mystical power and really buckles down with piccolo training for the Tournament. A couple things to note here. When Frieza returns from Hell him and Goku go at it at "Full Power" in front of Beerus/Whis. They one hit punch each other for a dual KO. When Gohan asks to fight his father before the Tournament he matches him in SS2 form, and even goes a step further to call Goku out for not going full power. When Goku powers up to SSGSS he attacks Gohan and lands a solid blow to Gohan's face. This, what should be devastating, blow to Gohan is answered with a solid (and felt) punch the abdomen of Goku with a few choice words, "I SAID FULL POWER." Goku's response? SSGSS w/ Kaio Ken x an unknown value. Whew.... take a breath. Let's think about this. Hit was the one to bring this power out of Goku, who intended to use it on Beerus. Not to mention this was post Zamasu Arc. Goku is far stronger in base for by this point in the series, meaning that his SSGSS form is exponentially stronger. Gohan, at this moment, has proven he is not only a contender but, a threat.3. In the T.O.P Gohan faces Dyspo and choses to sacrifice himself for the benefit of the team. This is where we should have seen Gohan step in as the one to master UI. Hear me out here. Remember when Goku knocked out Gohan in the above fight? The last thing Gohan did was punch at Goku while unconscious... Sound familiar? I think this was our first look at the basis of UI and I expected Gohan to master a skill like UI first. 4. DBS: Broly no mention of Gohan in this movie was what limited the full potential of the film. As someone who has seen the move at least 25 times I feel like I can say the complete absence of such a powerful defender of earth completely unmentioned? It was a hole in the story for me. It take my overall rating of the movie from a 10/10 to 9/10. Not to mention, Gohan had a huge part to play in the earlier "Non-Cannon" movies. All in all, Gohan is still a huge ,potential, development character and I would love to see him get his due screen time.

I really enjoyed this video, the depth of analysis and dedication to the heart of the show was fantastic. But, I disagree with the community on the fact that Gohan's development has been mishandled. Simply put, when looking at Gohan next to another mishandled character, the contrast between the two propels both character's developments forward albeit in the background of the story. That other character is Killin. Despite Krillin having a major effect on the overall story (such as driving Goku to become SS) he gave up fighting by the events of super. In much the same way, Gohan did too. However, it was not because he lacked the power necessary to contend against threats. It was more about his decision to become a father and husband in all the ways that Goku never was. Looking at how Gohan handles his family's dynamic should be enough to support this. Granted, I may be flawed, as I'm focusing most of my attention to analyzing the way he acts in super. I feel he is given more retribution than most characters, and the best way to recognize that is to look through his eyes at the way the story develops. He must recognize what he is to the overall story. But it doesn't affect him because he knows where and what he's meant to do. He understands what's important to him in much the same way that Goku does.

I'll be honest, I always had a grudge against gohan for killing my favorite villain, but growing up as a kid gohan was like growing up right there beside me, being scared or angry, or needing to be babysat by villains in certain movies or even being used as a catalyst for characters like piccolo , trunks, and gohan. Akira's problem is he has a hard time handling the Zfighters PERIOD. Where certain manga such as naruto or one piece can give their characters a pretty decent growth and rebirth to feel more important even when compared to a colossal protagonist, Akira really fumbles with the Zfighters in light of bringing Vegeta into the fold. I'm sure it wasn't entirely Akira's fault as some research indicates he had troubles with his publishers and fans when wanting to shift around ideas. But even so Akira does far too little for the Zfighters and a tad far too much for goku where goku has in a tad lost in touch with the early dragon ball and dbz gohan that used needed to borrow life energy to stop evil. Even when turning super saiyan he proclaimed himself the guardian of good and the stopper of evil but goku has kinda fallen from that role, the catalyst that hated seeing his friends die to assholes. Anyways getting back to the point I think Gohan has one last chance and it has to do with his rage similar to Broly after the Broly movie we learned that Broly was so enraged that he gained the vast powers of great ape without needed to become one as well as being able to learn from his opponents, as well as we already know saiyans now multiply their powers when fighting other saiyans. All we need to see is that Gohan, similar to Broly has a rage unlock anything like Vegeta or Goku and in a sense they don't hold the suffering of loss as much as gohan does with that much of the old saiyan canon stays in tact with rage and loss being their primary catalysts.

There is one aspect that I think you may be missing. IMO one of the most critical aspects of the DBZ and Super stories is the dynamic between Goku and Vegeta. The struggle between the two has played an enormous role in driving the story of most sagas, from frieza, android, cell, buu and of course all of the Super sagas. IMO the struggle between Vegeta and Goku just somehow wouldn’t be the same if there was another saiyan who was equally (or even more) as strong as them. Vegeta IMO is the most developed character in DB period, we have loved seeing his character slowly shift and mature whilst at the same time keeping his age old quest of surpassing Goku and being the strongest Saiyan ever - if suddenly Gohan was also stronger than him and Goku it would kind of just crap all over his character development. I know that this happened during the cell games but I think that is a special case given all of the circumstances (such as Goku dying, the culmination of Gohan’s story, etc) If I had to chose between losing the character development and character direction of Vegeta or Gohan - I easily chose Gohan, I think losing Vegeta’s character would have been far more disappointing. I think that the writers of DBZ and Super themselves understood this as well, we can see that after Gohan got his Mystic power boost he has never been in a combat scene which also involved Vegeta - and was only really properly brought back into combat in the TOP when it was clear that Gohan was far behind Vegeta and therefore he could be included without diluting the Vegeta vs Goku struggle narrative.

Here's what I think: 1) Goku should have stayed dead after Cell 2) Buu comes around and it's up to Gohan to stop him. True to his reactive nature, he could have realized his failure to keep training, put himself through serious struggle, maybe even died and received training from Goku before being resurrected somehow, and then saved the world in a spectacular climax. 3) As years pass, he continues to train, receive spirit guidance from Goku, and then Pan is born, who becomes the next protagonist, and is an active character like Goku who drives the plot forward on her own, becoming the first woman super saiyan at a very young age.

Gohan is gone and can never come back. Honestly, while it's definitely easy to monday morning quarterback, Toriyama shouldn't have jumped so far into the future with the Buu saga. It should have jumped the 3 years with chibi Goten and Trunks while Gohan is going through the hassle of juggling being earth's protector while also having life responsibilities. Could have still brought in Babadi and Buu but have made the former a bit more like Freeza in terms of enslaving people as well as fuel for reviving Buu. They could have still included Videl but also included new characters as well like an apprentice for Tao who's family was killed by the saiyans originally (vaporized city). He'd act as the Vegeta to Gohans Goku. Again, hindsight is 20/20. Just seems Toriyama really could have gone somewhere with him and just dropped it as soon as it got hard

There are so many things in the Buu saga that could've been used to drive Gohan forward rather than Goku. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20, however, you could've easily done things to develop the character properly. By the start of the cell saga, we already had a fully developed Goku. His death at the end was fitting, and gave a full circle moment. And it was a great catalyst to propel Gohan forward. I get people dislike the high school stuff with Gohan in Buu saga, but upon rewatching, it's actually a really enjoyable part of the Buu saga. Due entirely to Gohan's personality development alongside the introduction of Videl. Gohan ran around like a sentai hero. His reactive hero position could've shifted, as he was a child. This would've been his true character progression. Imagine, rather than Goku showing us SSJ3, it was Gohan. Natural escalation. Would've also set a stage where you could get new writers for later gens of Dragonball characters to continue the cash cow and you'd have a similar fan following to Jojo. Ultimately, the arc could've been Gohan actually growing up, and figuring out motivations.

Toriyama always does this to characters after he's done using them up. To me, gohan is gone after the cell saga lol

Almost seems like the Gohan we need now is the Trunks alternate timeline Gohan with one arm.

Great fighters do not always make great teachers and great teachers aren't always great fighters. It has been stated that gohan was a tremendous teacher (to trunks) but we didnt have te opportunity to see him as such. The alternate future in which Gohan was the sole survivor had the event occur differently but his core personality traits remained the same, thus Gohan can still BE that great teacher and reestablish himself as a teacher/master of his way. In a sense he has already done it, in the future

Gohan is too relaxed and in full control of his emotions in the current DBZ saga. There have been few, if any parts of the story recently which have managed to bring out Gohan's emotions to the extent of the events when he is a kid. To make Gohan great again all you would need is a single scene, where adult Gohan like when he was a child, loses control through raw emotion following an incident and utilizes his untapped potential by decimating a tough enemy.

Eh I get the point but Gohan’s story has ended. He never wanted to be a fighter he doesn’t have a love for it. That’s probably because he was essentially banned from it until 4 and then was suddenly thrown into death battles almost nonstop until he was 11. He has never seemed to enjoy fighting and has always done it out of an obligation (Saiyans, being the strongest and healthy Z fighter left when it’s time to leave for Namek, Androids, being the Saiyaman in general, Videl blackmailing him, Buu, tournament of destruction etc.) Not fighting would’ve meant the death of friends and family. Not to mention when he actually seemed to finally get that edge he ended up getting his father killed. I find it fitting that he was able to become acclimated to human life, meet a girl and have a family and job while being a part time crime fighter. And actually be present in their lives which was something Goku wasn’t able to do for him. Personally I find it to be a fitting end for the shy, kind bookworm.

as a matter of fact, I felt in cell saga that goku was the architect/engineer and gohan was the product, for me he was the main hero there is a bulma's phrase in the trunks story that carves in my mind (this phrase wasn't translate well in english manga): goku wasn't only strong , but also wise.. he would have found the solution if he had been alive sorry , gohan was good , but the story was disjointed since goku's death, I never felt him like the main protagonist, in the bojack movie it was clear as water this aspect...

I've not seen super, so my thought when I started the video was "wait. I mean, Gohan in the buu saga isn't "that" bad, but he's definitely one of the best in the rest of Z. Do people have a problem with him?"

I haven't watched dragon ball super yet but if you show me gohan getting KOed like that again... u might get KOed... I would have written gohan using his brain with strategy rather than power lvls. Leave the power levels to goku. Give gohan strategy. Although this might have given the series another dimension that might not fit with it's identity.
